What makes you happy? Do you really know.

come alive

I meant to write this blog last week, but time ran away with me & I have been coaching a VIP Client in Paris and on a brilliant Presenting Workshop with Nigel Risner.

I think the blog will hopefully be even more thought provoking from my travels.

So take a moment, what does make you really happy?

I watched Adam Hill, the comedian’s clip about being an Inflatable Person… you should have a look, click here:   http://youtu.be/pOLQznQdY3o. Like it?  I was given his DVD, and I shared the clip with my Make 2014 Brilliant group, who loved it.  I think it gives a really simple, yet profound message.  You have a choice, every day, to either Inflate people by being in your company, or deflate them. This has a ripple effect to the people around them, and ultimately affects how you are in yourself.  Take that one step further in your thoughts, what are you doing today, to leave an Inflatable Legacy?  One that really makes a difference? And this difference can just be to your family, or it could be a big global vision, it doesn’t matter just have the intention to make people feel good by being in your company, and also, allow yourself to feel good in yourself (please).

By inflating people and feeling good in yourself, this doesn’t mean you are arrogant (unless you choose to be in my opinion). Many people I coach say, but if I feel good will it not make me arrogant? I really believe no, that’s your choice and opinion. By feeling good and happy in yourself, you just allow yourself to be content, and it’s an easier place to live in yourself than by not being happy. There’s a really good TED Talk from Cameron Russell (click here:http://on.ted.com/CameronRussell) , about learning to love the person you are.  But another key message is don’t compare with others, as you never really know someones story.  Don’t wish you were prettier, fitter, more clever, faster, earned more than them… that they are better, you can’t etc… because the very nature of comparison sabotages your success, limits your potential and slows your growth.  Instead observe the things you like, notice the things that excite and motivate you… write it down and then change your mindset.  Move from I can’t, towards perhaps I could, to I will.  It’s scary, its uncomfortable but it’s a choice which you can make. And by making that choice you increase your potential happiness.

With these two thoughts in your mind, hopefully they have provoked ideas and awareness of where you are right now?

I would like to summarise with a few wonderful thoughts from Nigel Risner.  I have done several workshops with him.  Firstly I’m often asked why do you need to do them? Well, if you work for yourself feedback/forward is essential. I am passionately determined to improve what I give to my clients, I ‘enjoy’ getting uncomfortable and being challenged and I like meeting new people.  Nigel says it like it is, he is extremely direct and exceptionally good.  You may not like what he has to say, but my goodness, if you learn from it will you improve!

What does this have to do with happiness? Well, what makes you happy this year, will probably be different to 5 years ago, and in 5 years’ time.  My learnings from Nigel have helped keep happiness in perspective. And during my most challenging moments, especially when I lose my thoughts with the Weils Disease legacy, I remember that happiness is a journey too.  There will always be highs, and there will always be lows, it’s what you do with them.

I hope my summary of my learnings inspires you to find a great happiness:

  1. Always be human, have clear boundaries but allow people to see your fears, your limitations as well as you happiness. Be an inflatable, real person
  2. Learn to really like you, be kind, humble, respectful & courageous.  Speak to yourself like you would to someone who really matters to you.  That means kick yourself or nuture yourself when required, and know that by loving the person you are, reflects positively to all around you.
  3. Let go of comparisons, and focus on modelling excellence, and learning to be your best. Let go of the limitations of your mind, and work on a strategy of achievement

These are directly from Nigel Risner…

  1. Drink from the knowledge of life, daily. Learn, read, Grow.
  2. Steal a little time every day to give to someone else
  3. Swear to have the best day of your life, every day. Life is no Dress Rehearsal.
  4. Lie down in your bed at night and be thankful that you are alive, have dreams and that things really are possible.

I would love to know what makes you happy?  Do you spend time with people who Inflate you, and do you Inflate them?  Perhaps you could do, send, write or say something to the 7 people who Inflate you?  This will start your happiness momentum.

From my most challenging moments over the last year with Weils etc have come my happiest moments. I won’t lie and say it’s easy, but I do lie in bed each night and feel extremely grateful I am alive, things are possible and I have dreams… J

Have the most amazing day from reading this.
