Finding Hope & Connection: A Conversation for Time to Talk Day

Brave the Big Talk This #TimeToTalkDay

Sometimes the conversations that matter most are the ones we find hardest to start. On February 5, Time to Talk Day reminds us that opening up about our mental health isn’t just brave – it can be the first step towards support and healing.

This year’s theme, “Brave the Big Talk,” encourages us to move beyond surface level check ins and have those deeper, more meaningful conversations about how we’re really doing. By speaking up or creating space for others to share, you help every honest conversation break down the barriers of silence and stigma.

Use today to lean into courage and create space for honest talk; asking for help or being there for someone changes everything.

Breaking the silence

The concept often evoking fear and discomfort is one we tend to avoid discussing. Yet, acknowledging its existence is important, especially when we may have contemplated challenging moments ourselves or fear someone we care about might be struggling. Avoiding the discussion won’t make these challenges disappear.

Unravelling emotions

Thoughts of difficulty bring to the surface a multitude of emotions, each unique to the individual affected. It’s a complex experience but with its own set of intricacies. Writing this openly, having been touched by familial challenges and coaching others through similar situations, I hope to offer support and understanding.

Taking Action

If you or someone you know is in a difficult place:

  • Small Steps Matter: Can you make just 1% of your day okay? Change your state – take a walk, listen to music, watch TV, eat something, take a breath, hug an animal, volunteer or reach out to a helpline.

Sometimes calling a friend or family member isn’t immediately possible. These small actions may help shift things until you can seek help. Take it hour by hour, day by day.

If you’re supporting someone in a tough spot:

  • Connect with compassion: Reach out through text, a letter or an email. Share what you’re up to, express why you value them, go for a walk together or send photos. Human connection and showing value go a long way.

While discussing challenges and seeking support are crucial, sharing moments of life and meaning can make the person feel less overwhelmed.

Self care matters

Remember Yourself: If you’re helping others, it’s essential to seek support for yourself too. Your wellbeing is just as important.

Coping with loss

If you’re dealing with loss:

  • Acknowledge emotions: Don’t bypass negative emotions; they’re normal, challenging and tough. Allowing yourself space to process is essential for the journey towards a new beginning. Whether you choose activity or pause for healing, listen to what you need.

As my grandmother used to say, ‘this too will pass, your way will open up.’

You matter, even when you don’t realise it. Find hope and courage in the midst of life’s challenges.
